comment on sukhi blog

i agree with your comment that a lie is a lie no matter what but i do think that there can be a justified reason why some people lie and when it is told with a valid reason such as saving someone heartache it may not be such a bad thing.

Stealing

Stealing is one act which, what ever way it is looked at, is an act of being bad. I struggle to think of any examples where stealing is justified. After thinking the only examples i could come up with were, stealing something back which originally belonging to you or stealing from the rich and giving to the poor (robin hood style), but even those are still not morally right. It we look at Islamic law it 'prescribes that a thief’s hand should be cut, but such punishment is never inflicted when there is the slightest doubt that the thief was impelled to crime by hunger. It can only be applied if goods stolen are over a set value and consideration is given to whether this is a first offence or the person is a compulsive thief. Its effectiveness as a deterrent can be demonstrated in that in a 400 year period when it was applied 6 people had their hand cut off.' I know it is an extreme way of looking stealing but it is an example of one way stealing is handling in Islamic culture and how it seems to have had a positive effect on reducing theft crimes.

The Volcanos' Being Bad

As everyone must have heard by now, the Volcanic eruption in Iceland has pretty much disrupted the whole world, and I am a direct victim as i am stuck here in India for 2 and a half weeks more than i was meant to! But its amazing how big the impact this Volcanic eruption has had. As airports all over the road have been closed, passengers are stranded all over the world. Firstly, hotels are having to kick out guests from hotels as they have stayed the amount of nights they have book, or just have no more money to stay any longer. Surely this is an act of 'being bad' by the large hotel chains or is it just then not being compassionate and thinking about money? The next acts of 'being bad' are taking place in the airports that these stranded passengers have no choice but to stay it. Riots and fights are taking place in airports as toilets are being blocked up, water is running short, seats are limited for people to sleep on. Thousands of people are stranded in airports all over the world and the result of this is upset and angry passengers resorting to violence to try and help the situation. Surely this is being bad? or are these just examples of acts of desperation?

Lying

There are many types of lyina and in my opinion, they can be split in to two different groups. Theres white lies which are usually told with no bad intentions, then theres all the other types of lies! They are told either to hurt people, to with hold valuable information from someone or to be down right mean! Lying to someone can have many consequences including breaking the trust between you and the person you lied to and may even have more serious consequences! According to the bbc website 'Lying is probably one of the most common wrong acts that we carry out' it also says 'Most people would say that lying is always wrong, except when there's a good reason for it - which means that it's not always wrong!' which is a statement i thoroughly agree with.

Infidelity

Before thursdays lecture, i had never actually thought about infidelity or my opinions on it. Personally, iv have never been unfaithful to any of my partners, and its not something i condone, however, i can understand that there may be situations where people feel the need to be unfaitful to their partners. Some people may feel that being unfaithful is the norm and not have a guilty concious when doing so. This i feel is wrong and the person who is unfaithful could be hurting many people, themselves included. In terms of 'justified infidelity' i think certain situations such as if a person is in an abusive relationship and they feel they are unable to leave the abusive partner, they may find someone else who can give them affection.

Although infidelity involves lying, cheating and decieving someone, it is becoming the norm and scarily a money making business. While researching infidelity on the internet i found many websites helping people get over being cheated on however, i also found websites encoraging married people to cheat on their partners!

Drugs

Hmm drugs, what to say ey. Drugs are somthing that many people try atleast once in their life, whether they like the effects is a different matter. There are so many different types of drugs nowadays, its hard to keep track on whats what and what effect they can have. I think the most popular drug that is most common amongst people of all ages is Marajuana, also known as 'Weed'. Weed, although it is a drug, is also considered sacred in Rastafarian culture and it also known to have relieving properties for people which long term health issues such as chronic pain. It also has many other health relieving properties such as helping asthmatics with attacks and those with Huntingtons disease and epilepsy.

Very Bad Cinema

Since watching 'Kids' i think ive recommended it to so many friends there sick of me constantly going on about it! i really did think the film was amazing though, but i can understand why people called for it to be banned. My opinion is that those who wanted it to be banned were scared of the truth. Scared to admit that things that happened in that film really do occur on the streets. Although it was released about 15 yrs ago, it does stil apply in todays society. Youngsters are becoming more promiscuous and carless with who they sleep with. The film dealt with so many issues in the hour and half it covered that it was hard to keep up. The film may be considered slightly exaggerated but it is based on an underlying truth about what goes on on the streets when youngsters are unsuperivsed.

Masturbation

Hmmm.. this is one of those touchy subjects..well for me it is anyway. Suppose that was the whole point of the lecture..'why is masturbation so taboo?' For me personally, i feel that my upbringing has made it an embarrassing subject to talk about. In Asian society sexual subjects are very rarely discussed out loud and elders do not consider it appropriate to discuss such subjects with their children. The youngsters main source of sexual education comes from school, peers and maybe older brothers or sisters. The one thing about masturbation is that it is completely private. It involves only one person (and any other objects of their choice!) so therefore no one else will know about it, unless ur caught in th act that is!
Although it is considered taboo, it does have its plus points. Studied have shown that is can help to cut risks of prostate cancer in men.

Smoking

Smoking. Why do people smoke? What is about smoking that attracts so many people? As I'm not a smoker i asked people who were and wasn't surprised by their answer. Many of them told me it was to look 'cool'. When they go on a night out they feel smoking is a great way to socialise with other smokers in outdoor areas and also people have found their current partners while inhaling other peoples passive smoke. Since the smoking ban in 2007 and the introduction of outdoor smoking areas, people have started to take up smoking as a way to fit in with their friends so they aren't left out when they all go out for a 'fag'. Curiosity is another reason why people start smoking, they see older siblings or mates trying it and feel the need to see why they are doing it. Some people also feel it makes them look older and mature, but that fact that someone thinks a little stick that could kill them, makes them look older obviously says a lot about their childish thought processes!

suggestion for week 12

When thinking about a field trip for week 12, there are many things that come to mind, however many of them are not very feasible or appropriate for a university field trip. When looking over the weekly topics covered in the module the most obvious suggestions the come to mind include adult shop or adult cinema (not too sure the university would be happy funding that!), tattoo parlour (hmm souvenir tattoo anyone?), prison (to show what being bad can actully result in) or maybe even a crack house! But like i said, the majority of these not being feasible or even legally applicable for a university field trip! So back to suggestions that may actually be legal, a casino might be a good but then it could be debated whether gambling is actually considered 'being bad' until it becomes an addiction. When thinking about addiction, you automaticlly think of addictions to alcohol or drugs, things considered morally unacceptable, you dont think about other things that people can become addicted to.

This link shows some of the many things that people can become addicted to. Theres one on the list that i have to admit to being addicted to. The addiction to chocolate is one that affects many all over the world, including me. I crave chocolate and get a feeling of happiness when i get some, its like heaven! Maybe close to the feeling that smokers get when they satisfy their nicotine craving! So anyway, back to the reason im writing this post, the field trip! After all that talk about chocolate i think the only place to go is Cadbury World, it maybe like taking a drugs addict to a crack house, but i think for the sake of this module, its worth it! :)
